Lilliana’s story written by her Mom.

August 15th, 2022

My husband and I lost our sweet girl, Lilliana, at 20 weeks and 4 days on July 30th, 2022.

We went into my OB on July 29th for the 20 weeks ultrasound. We were so excited to finally see our little girl. She was just perfect. A healthy baby.

At the end of the ultrasound the tech told us that there could be an issue with my cervix. My doctor saw me right away and after an exam we were sent immediately to the hospital to see a high risk doctor. My doctor didn’t give us more information other than my cervix looked like it was dilating.

After being admitted to the hospital and seeing the high risk doctor, they told me that I had an incompetent cervix. I had no symptoms, nothing triggered me to think there was an issue. The doctor talked to us about a procedure they would be able to do to keep her in and I would have to be on bed rest for the remainder of my pregnancy. We were scared but calm, knowing everything would be okay after the procedure. Our girl was healthy, she just needed more time.

I was prepped and ready for surgery that evening. I went into the operating room, the doctors came in, and then everything changed.

I was told that my cervix was too dilated for the procedure and my body was already in labor. There was nothing they could do to save our girl. I was told that an incompetent cervix isn’t something that is known until it happens.

The next day, July 30th, my labor was induced even more and I gave birth to a perfect baby girl.

Lilliana was born alive and we had her for about 45 minutes. It was the most beautifully tragic day I’ve ever had. Overwhelmed with joy seeing my girl and the crushing grief knowing 45 minutes was all we would ever have with her.

My grief is new and profound. Now I’m trying to figure out this new normal in my life.
